Why would you settle for regular ice cream when you could have cereal ice cream?

Tess Sullivan and Kelly Ireland have come a long way since their humble beginnings of serving their delicious creation from the back of a bicycle. By the start of this summer, the masterminds behind Tizzy K’s Ice Cream will be ready to open their first brick-and-mortar on Main Street in Warren, Rhode Island.

Tizzy K’s was a result of falling in love and finding inspiration.

“My boyfriend and I met each other eight years ago when I was hired to replace him as a bartender," Tess said. “He was moving to Australia, I got hired to replace him, and in the meantime, we started dating and fell in love. Six months later, we moved to Australia and traveled the world together.”

Tess always knew she wanted to plant her roots in Rhode Island, and convinced Kelly to do the same.

Both Tess and Kelly had a passion for the restaurant business, but they wanted to get away from serving and bartending.

When they discovered cereal milk, a path was set in motion.

How Tizzy K’s Came to Be

“We watched Chef’s Table about Christina Tosi. She created Milk Bar out of NYC, and they talked about this concept of cereal milk,” Tess said.

The couple traveled to NYC to try it firsthand.

“The cereal milk ice cream (at Milk Bar) was kind of an afterthought with just one flavor,” Tess said. “We left that trip thinking about the best cereals from childhood and started doing some research.”

They created their recipe and began serving locals by the pedestrian bridge in Providence from the back of a bicycle, with a little help from dry ice to keep it frozen.

Soon after, Tess and Kelly renovated a shipping container into a fully functioning ice cream shop, and their ice cream cereal continued to gain popularity.

What Is Cereal Ice Cream?

If you slurp up the remaining milk after finishing a bowl of cereal, you’ll love Tizzy K’s.

Your cereal of choice gets steeped in an ice cream base, strained and churned into mouthwatering ice cream, topped with cereal crunch and a Rice Krispies treat square.

Flavors include Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Trix, Oreo O's and "Surprise Flavor."

Tizzy K’s Opens New Location in Warren

Tizzy K’s has always been made at Hope and Main in Warren, a food incubator where local food businesses can start their concepts at a low cost.

“We have a community there,” Tess said. Opening a brick-and-mortar at the very place where the ice cream is made is like a full-circle moment for Tess and Kelly.

“I hope that with the expansion, more and more people will get to try Tizzy’s,” Tess said. “It will become a staple to the East Bay, and for summers to come, friends and families will ride the bike paths and share the memories of summer days and summer nights by the park at Tizzy K’s.”

The new Tizzy K’s at 747 Main St. in Warren is slated to open by the third week of June. Keep an eye on their social media for updates.
