My wallet is happy, all thanks to a Portuguese popsic.

I never in a million years would have imagined a piece of bread saving me money, but it did and it happened at the 105th Feast of the Blessed Sacrament on Sunday.

Are you ready for one of the most amazing stories, in my opinion, that you've ever heard?

Sit back and buckle up.

There I was, cooking some carne espeto with my buddy Jeff over the fire pit when out of nowhere, it started downpouring, and it was relentless. A single second in the rain was equivalent to getting a five-gallon bucket of water dumped over your head.

Unfortunately, I had forgotten to protect my cell phone that was in my shorts pocket and since it had headphones plugged in, water or moisture made its way into the device, damaging the phone instantly.

Ready for the kicker?

Using my handy Portuguese ingenuity and fast thinking, I took the phone out of the protective case and shoved it into the middle of a Portuguese pop. I squeezed it to form a tight seal around the phone, wrapped it in paper towels and sealed it air-locked tight in a plastic bag.

Here's where it gets good.

An estimated 10 minutes after performing an unusual surgery on my cell phone, I started to hear text messages ring out from within the papo seco and it was at that moment that I realized I had changed the water-damaged phone game.

As I removed the phone from the bread, I noticed that the center of the roll was wet and had absorbed the moisture from the phone. Trust me, I still can't believe this happened, but I will never ever rely on rice (that normally takes overnight) to revive a water-damaged phone when I can get the job done in 10 minutes from a Portuguese roll.

You're welcome.
