New Bedford's Buttonwood Park Zoo recently had a food truck on-site. Let's just say it was a total "smash," but will it return?

It's said that the food truck industry in the United States is worth $1.4 billion. The Food Fighters, a locally owned business that got its start at New Bedford's Brooklawn Park in April, is trying to get its share.

Its specialty is the culinary sensation known as the smash burger.

Our Modern Kitchen describes the burger this way:

Smashed flat over a searingly hot flat-grill until you get a crispy, craggy-edged, asymmetric, cooked-through patty that’s juicy, caramelised, beefy and, frankly, the best burger you’re ever going eat.

"I didn’t want the truck to have a specific food name like 'Smash Burger City' because if it didn’t catch on and people didn’t like it, it still allowed me to go a different direction without changing the name or design," owner Alan Garcia said.

But it seems like Garcia doesn't have to worry about that yet, showcasing on his menu fun burger names such as "Dirty Burger Done Dirt Cheap," "Cheeseburger State of Mind" and "The Cow That Sold the World."

Word has gotten out about the latter and it's proven a popular seller because of how crazy and amazing it is.

The smash burger is establishing itself on the SouthCoast. Union Flats in downtown New Bedford is among the restaurants that also have one on the menu.

The food truck stopped by Buttonwood recently to gather a little more foot traffic, and plans to operate from time to time in the park, just past the Warming House, off the rotary and next to the ball fields.

You may have seen the truck at Whaling City Festival over the summer and it has a standing agreement with Buzzards Bay Brewing in Westport to serve there every Wednesday and Thursday.

If you have seen them around or have taken a peek at the Facebook page, you may noticed that name of many of the fresh burgers are named after songs and we are loving it.

Keep an eye out for this food truck.
