For the third year, we've teamed up with the United Way of Greater New Bedford to bring Holiday Wishes to the Southcoast.

This year we are working to make the holidays brighter for five local families including the Mary Ellen and JJ from Wareham.

Mary Ellen has had primary custody of her 12-year-old grandson, JJ, since he was born. Mary Ellen recently battled cancer and is currently living with worsening MS, which requires her to have a home health-aide and severely limits her physical abilities.

They have extended family in New Hampshire who could help, but Mary Ellen wants to stay in Wareham as JJ is excelling in school and Mary Ellen is hoping he will get a scholarship to Taber Academy in a couple years.

Mary Ellen’s husband passed away unexpectedly so between medical issues and Mary Ellen being on disability, money is tight. They live with a “need, not want” mentality so holidays have always been small. JJ bears the burden of helping to care for his grandmother while still trying to be "normal" kid.

Mary Ellen simply wants to give JJ a wonderful holiday and get him some new gear for basketball - like shorts, sweatpants, hoodies, and socks.
