It's getting real warm outside and Erika Madden of The Star Drive‑In in East Taunton is setting an admirable example of what it means to lead with integrity.

As an extreme heat wave rolls through Southern New England and across the SouthCoast,Madden has made the decision to close completely on Tuesday, June 24, due to dangerously high kitchen temperatures and overwhelming humidity.

Rather than push through for the sake of sales, they’re putting the health and well-being of their employees first.

Prioritizing the Team Over Profits

With a tight space, lots of equipment and an already busy summer season in full swing, the kitchen at The Star can quickly turn into an oven of its own. Madden didn’t hesitate to be transparent with her customers, explaining that if they do have to close, it won’t be due to lack of demand, it will be to ensure their employees are treated with respect during a heat wave.

“I would be losing sales to ensure I treat my employees right,” she wrote.

Respecting Limits, Delivering Quality

When the kitchen is packed with bodies and heat-producing equipment, maintaining quality and speed becomes a serious challenge. Instead of sacrificing their standards or their team’s safety, The Star chose to take a step back.

I, myself, have worked in the restaurant industry and can attest that it's not just about the discomfort of hot conditions, it’s about keeping up at a rather quick pace to ensure the customers are getting their food timely.

The Heat Hits its Peak: Here’s What to Expect

According to ABC 6 Providence Meteorologist Kelly Bates, Tuesday is expected to be the hottest day of the week, with temperatures nearing 100°F and a heat index climbing well into triple digits. Thankfully, a thunderstorm may cool things off slightly Wednesday, but true relief isn't expected until Thursday, when temperatures finally drop back into the more manageable 70s and 80s.

Takeaway Tips for this Heat Wave

With heat indexes reaching unsafe levels, it’s more important than ever to take proper precautions. First, stay hydrated and avoid peak-hour outdoor activity when possible. If you have to be out, dress lightly, take breaks, and stay cool. Second, know that a bit of relief is on the way as the week progresses. Until then, keep safety top of mind.

As the region sweats through one of the hottest stretches of the season, Madden is sending a strong message: their people matter most. They’re not just talking about values, they’re living them. Once the temps cool down, you can bet their loyal fans will be back. Until then, hats off to The Star for getting it right.
