Taunton Senator Marc Pacheco Not Seeking Re-Election

TAUNTON (WBSM) — Longtime Massachusetts State Senator Marc Pacheco will not be seeking re-election this year.

Pacheco posted the announcement to his official Facebook page on Tuesday night.

“After conversations with my family and my staff, I will not be filing nomination papers for re-election to the Third Bristol and Plymouth Senate District,” Pacheco wrote. “I make this decision with a heart full of gratitude for the opportunities I have had to serve in the Massachusetts state legislature, and with sincere gratitude to everyone who has supported me throughout this incredible journey.”

However, Pacheco also pointed out that although he’s not seeking a return to his current seat, it doesn’t mean he’s stepping away from politics.

“This decision does not mean I’m closing the door on other existing or future electoral or appointed positions in public service,” he wrote.

The Taunton Democrat has served since 1993, making him the longest-serving member or “dean” of the Massachusetts Senate. His district includes Taunton and nearby towns, extending out to Wareham, Marion and Carver.

The 71-year-old Pacheco served three years in the Massachusetts House of Representatives before being elected to the Senate, and was previously a member of the Taunton School Committee and served as Chief Assistant to the Mayor of Taunton.

Pacheco pointed out in his announcement that he is proud of his legislative accomplishments such as the Taxpayer Protection Act, also known as the “Pacheco Law,” as well as efforts to keep Taunton State Hospital open, the opening of the new Taunton courthouse, his work on climate change and other initiatives.

“Most importantly, I am proud of the work my office has done in serving the individual needs of our constituents,” Pacheco wrote. “While I am proud of all the work we have accomplished, much still needs to be done.”

Pacheco said he is “unsure what the future will bring” but that “the door is always open for new and exciting opportunities,” and that he will continue to work with “everyone who is interested in making Massachusetts a better place to live.”

Earlier that same day, longtime State Representative from the 8th Bristol District Paul A. Schmid III announced he would not be seeking re-election in the fall.
