Not long ago, it appeared as though FedEx Corp. would develop a warehouse where once the Silver City Galleria mall was located at Routes 140 and 24 in Taunton. Economic conditions being what they are, those plans have changed.

The Taunton City Council voted unanimously in July 2022 to advance a proposal for a distribution warehouse facility for FedEx Ground Package Systems at 2 and 8 Galleria Mall Drive.

FedEx Ground Package Systems is a part of the Memphis, Tennessee-based FedEx Corp.

FedEx was looking to construct a 560,000-square foot distribution center at the site of the former mall. The warehouse facility would have added about 150 new jobs to the Taunton economy, many of which would have been part-time.

The company had hoped the new facility would accommodate the package overflow from existing facilities in South Boston and in Hartford, Connecticut.

FedEx has scaled back expansion plans, as has Amazon. Co-Star.com reported higher costs and declining revenue from online sales led to the decision by Amazon to rethink its plans due to "excess" warehouse space.

The Silver City Galleria closed in 2020 and was demolished in June 2021. An affiliate of Portman Holdings purchased the property for $75 million.

In an appearance on WBSM, Taunton Mayor Shaunna O'Connell said the owners are working with a new potential buyer for the property and could announce a new plan for the land sometime this year.

O'Connell believes the former mall property would be developed for commercial or industrial use, not for housing. She said an announcement would be forthcoming when a deal is reached.

The Silver City Galleria first opened in 1992.
