Buckle up, because this app is taking us to the next generation of socialization. I'm not sure if this has happened to you, but my early years of going out for drinks can relate. Picture this: You're heading out for a night on the town, but you're not quite sure where the crowd is, what the atmosphere is like, or whether a particular bar is worth checking out. What if there was an app that could give you a sneak peek before you even walked through the door?

That's exactly what Swansea resident Jonathan Carreiro had in mind when he developed an innovative new app called Speakeazy. The 37-year-old, who was born and raised in Swansea, has created a social networking platform designed to help people navigate nightlife while making meaningful connections along the way.

I recently caught up with Carreiro to learn more about his creation, and I have to say, it's a pretty interesting concept. Instead of spending your night scrolling through social media awkwardly on the sidelines, this app helps users to connect with those around them.

A New Way to Experience Nightlife

According to Carreiro, Speakeazy allows users to see what's happening at nearby bars, restaurants, and entertainment venues before arriving. The app is designed to display information about the crowd, including the number of men and women present, along with stories posted by users that provide a glimpse of the atmosphere.

Perhaps one of its most interesting features is the ability to enter a venue's virtual chat room and see other participating users. Through personalized badges, people can showcase their interests, professions, and relationship status without having to write a lengthy biography. It's essentially a digital icebreaker that could make approaching someone in person a little less intimidating.

From Socializing to Becoming a Paid Influencer

Beyond helping people make connections, Speakeazy also plans to reward users for being socially active. As users interact through the app, they'll accumulate "Real Deal Points," allowing them to climb through different status levels.

Ready for the ultimate achievement? You can become an official Speakeazy influencer. Carreiro explained that users who reach 20,000 Real Deal Points will earn the platform's highest status, potentially opening the door to paid opportunities with local businesses looking for people to promote their brands. If you ask me, that's right on par for this new-age influencer world we now live in.

However, Carreiro emphasized that this feature is part of his long-term vision. Reaching 20,000 points will take time, allowing the platform to gradually identify its most active local influencers.

An Idea Born in Providence, Built With AI

Carreiro told me the idea first came to him in 2018 while enjoying a cigar with a friend at Tel Aviv in Providence. Looking around at the people nearby, he wondered how technology could make it easier for strangers to connect without the awkwardness of introducing themselves.

Although Carreiro works as a senior technology project manager and has helped develop applications for major insurance companies, Speakeazy marks the first time he's built an app entirely on his own.

"I would not have been able to accomplish this app without AI," Carreiro said, explaining that a project of this magnitude would traditionally require a team of specialists and a substantial financial investment. Hey, AI is the future, so why not? I'd do the same.

Bringing People Together Across the SouthCoast

Carreiro is initially focusing on nightlife destinations throughout Swansea, Providence, Boston, Bristol, Warren, and Newport, with hopes of eventually expanding across the country. "People are going to the bar and they're scrolling on their phones, meeting absolutely nobody," he said. "This gives people an opportunity to meet the people around them."

I'll end with this: this is not an endorsement, but admittedly, I really dig this idea. At one point in time, someone laughed at the app Tinder, and look at the popularity it's risen to now? Who knows, Speakeazy might just change the way we spend a night out. You heard it here first.

If SouthCoast Dogs Had a Dating App, It Would Look Something Like This

August 26 is International Dog Day, and it got me thinking. What if there was a way for dogs to connect with other dogs in the area to make new friends? Or maybe even find love? Twenty-six dogs living on the SouthCoast sent me their profile picture and bio. Let's see the eligible pups.
