The stories of how people get fired are sometimes as entertaining as they are embarrassing. Take, for example, the time I was fired from a job for eating a hot dog. It sounds ridiculous but it's true.

It all started when I was 16 or 17, working at a local grocery store. I was one of five chosen to work in a brand-new café. We were the charismatic crew intended to make the café flourish, and it’s safe to say the café is still going strong all these years later.

One night, I was tasked with taking leftover hot dogs from the steamer to the employee break room after the store closed. As the night manager locked the final door, I gathered up the remaining dogs in to-go boxes and walked them down the aisle to the break room. Along the way, I made the mistake of eating one, even though there was no one left in the store besides employees. Little did I know, this innocent act would lead to my downfall.

The next day, or perhaps a couple of days later (it seems so long ago), I was called into the owner’s office. The incriminating security footage of me stuffing my face with a hot dog had made its way to the top, and I was told I was being let go. The hot dogs were going to be tossed out anyway, and I’m not a fan of wasting food, but it didn’t matter. Eating on the clock was a fireable offense.

Despite the firing, the owner promised me a positive referral to wherever I ended up next as a “thank you” for being a great employee for five years. In retrospect, everything happens for a reason, and I’m quite happy with where I ended up. Plus, I can now eat as many hot dogs as I want without the fear of being reprimanded.
