Remembering September 11 Victims with SouthCoast Ties
As we remember 25 years since the September 11th attacks on America, it is vital that we remember just how many people here on the SouthCoast were directly affected. Sometimes, as time goes on, we tend to reduce the events to a statistic.
Round Numbers Dull the Pain
Over this past week, I've heard media members talk about 3,000 victims from the attacks. The problem is that when you casually throw out a round number, it numbs the pain. I don't think this is being done purposefully. However, the ballpark figure must be so tough for the now grown up children who lost a parent that day. For 25 years, their mom or dad was denied the joy of watching their kids blow out birthday candles. They missed the playoff games and the acceptance letters to college. Robbed.
How Many People Died on 9/11?
The official count of 9/11 victims stands at 2,977 souls lost. We don't count the 19 hijackers. The casualties at the World Trade Center were 2,753, the Pentagon lost 184 people, and 40 people died aboard Flight 93 in Pennsylvania, where the passengers fought back with incredible heroism. The number of first responders and others who later died of 9/11 related illnesses is unknowable, but that number is in the thousands and has eclipsed the number of victims who died in the actual attacks on 9/11.
SouthCoast Victims of 9/11 Need to Be Remembered
With all of this very much on the front of our minds, we remember the local souls who lost their lives 25 years ago today and the families that have missed them dearly ever since. Please look at these faces. These are the faces of local people who were taken from this earth too soon.
