Dartmouth Police Want You To Be On The Lookout

Dartmouth Police are warning South Coast residents to be very cautious this time of year after several  reports of an IRS scam.

According to the Departments Facebook Page Chief Robert Szala recently warned South Coast residents not to give any personal or financial information over the phone to anyone this tax season. The scammers usually target people by claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service or another government agency and demand that you send money right away. Many times the scammers insist your pay by credit card or wire transfer to avoid penalties or arrest.

Many people become a victim of this type of scam because they are afraid they will be arrested if they don't send the money right away. The Chief also wants to remind you never give your information to anyone over the phone. If you feel you may be the target of a scam feel free to contact Dartmouth Police of your local police agency.

If there is any doubt, call the IRS official hotline at 800-829-1040 or 800-829-4059 (TDD for the hearing impaired).

Any residents who are concerned about their identity or personal security should call the Dartmouth Police Department at 508-910-1731.
