Somerset Berkley High Schoolers Told to Shelter in Place for Drill

SOMERSET — Students and staff at Somerset Berkley Regional High School sheltered in place at 9:15 a.m. Monday for a law enforcement drill, according to a message from school officials and Somerset police.

Police posted a message from Somerset Berkley Regional Principal Dr. Susan Brelsford explaining the procedure to members of the community.

"K-9 Unit police dogs, which search for various drugs, searched randomly selected classrooms," Brelsford stated.

During the shelter-in-place protocol, students were escorted out of each room before the dogs entered to search, according to the principal's message.

"At no time were students in the classroom during the search," she added.

"We understand that such drills are anxiety provoking for some students, but this procedure was done with the students' safety as our top priority."

The principal went on to thank police as well as staff and students "for their cooperation during today's drill."
