Roger Williams Park Zoo Welcomes New American Red Wolf

Roger Williams Park Zoo announced on Facebook that the zoo has welcomed a new resident. Brave is a four-year-old female American red wolf joining the RWPZoo family.

According to the Facebook post, Brave was born at the Henson Robinson Zoo prior to moving to the Wildlife Science Center where she spent the last couple of years. Brave has been recommended by the American Red Wolf Species Survival Plan (SSP) Program.

“This pairing plays a significate role for the future of this critically endangered species. American red wolf populations have declined so dramatically that it’s estimated only a handful remain in the wild. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of AZA-accredited and other partner facilities across the U.S., the captive red wolf population has once again risen steadily to nearly 250 wolves!”

"Though breeding plays a large role, Diego and Brave also serve to educate and bring awareness to the plight of their wild counterparts. Now solely native to the coast of North Carolina, the red wolf faces many threats to their survival including hunting and human encroachment on their habitats."

Brave is still getting used to her new home and "she and Diego seem to be getting along wonderfully."
