Some Rhode Island Subway Restaurants Accept SNAP EBT Cards
Recipients of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in some states that participate in the Restaurant Meals Program (RMP) can use their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card to purchase food at Subway restaurants.
Currently, Subway only accepts EBT at select Arizona, California and Rhode Island locations.
FrugalReality.com says the RMP is a state option that allows specific SNAP recipients to buy prepared meals at restaurants using their SNAP benefits.
RMP-eligible individuals must be either 60 years of age or older, disabled, homeless, or a spouse of a SNAP client eligible for the RMP.
Frugal Reality says SNAP benefit recipients outside of Arizona, California, and Rhode Island may be able to purchase cold food items from a local Subway shop. The site says it is generally up to the management of the local shop and is considered rare.
In RMP-participating states, Subway only accepts EBT for in-store purchases. No online or Subway app purchases can are allowed using RMP EBT benefits.

According to Frugal Reality, these SNAP-eligible items can be purchased with an EBT card at Subway: bread and cereals, red meat, dessert items, dairy products, fruits and vegetables, cold sandwiches and salads, soft drinks, energy drinks, pork products, chicken meat and other poultry products, snack crackers and chips.
Massachusetts will launch an MRP program this fall that will allow some residents to use their benefits at certain restaurants and food trucks. Subway is not included in the program.
Restaurants and food trucks in 16 Massachusetts communities, including Faneek's Coney Island in Fall River, will participate in the MRP program.
The Healey-Driscoll Administration is committed to ensuring that the options available through SNAP are wide-ranging and reflect the communities we serve," said Secretary of Health and Human Services Kate Walsh.
No restaurants or food trucks in the Greater New Bedford or Taunton areas are on the initial list of MRP program participants.
GoBanking Rates.com says 15 percent of the population of Massachusetts (1,024,400 people) receive SNAP benefits assistance averaging $188 per month per household. In Rhode Island, it is 13 percent (139,400 people) at $183 per month per household.
