UPDATE (3:36 p.m.): The Bristol County District Attorney's Office says no foul play is suspected, and that the death appears to be a drug overdose of a homeless man.

NEW BEDFORD — Police are investigating after the discovery of a body was reported late Friday morning.

According to scanner reports, New Bedford Police were notified just before noon Friday of a deceased person found in the woods off of I-195, just west of the Hathaway Road overpass. The body was reportedly located about a quarter mile from the highway, near one of the holes at the Whaling City Golf Course.

Dartmouth Police also responded to the scene, as the body was found near the Dartmouth town line and it was unclear which department would have jurisdiction over the investigation. At around 12:30 it was determined that the body was found within the New Bedford city limits.

Police say the area in which the body was found is a known homeless encampment.

New Bedford Police are investigating.
