M. Night Shyamalan Says RI-Filmed ‘Remain’ Is His Best Yet
Though M. Night Shyamalan's Rhode Island-filmed movie Remain won't be released until early 2027, the famed director thinks it could be his best yet.
Last summer, Rhode Islanders were excited to see stars like Jake Gyllenhaal and Phoebe Dynevor filming scenes across the Ocean State. Now, test audiences are raving about it.
Shyamalan Says ‘Remain’ Is His Highest-Testing Film
Shyamalan recently told the crowd at Warner Bros. Discovery's annual Upfront presentation that Remain is the highest-testing film of his career.
A Unique Collaboration With Nicholas Sparks
Remain is also the first co-created production of his career, having teamed up with author Nicholas Sparks for the film's storyline. Sparks wrote the novel Remain, which was released on October 14, 2025, and Shyamalan wrote the screenplay, which will hit theaters on February 5, 2027.
What ‘Remain’ Is About
Together, the two greats crafted the story of an architect (played by Gyllenhaal) who moves to Cape Cod while recovering from depression. There he meets a mysterious woman and their love story becomes something otherworldly.

Having read the book myself, I'm not surprised early audiences are loving the film. The story is an intriguing one and I too can't wait to see how Shyamalan made the novel come alive on screen in his own unique way.
Early Buzz From Test Audiences
Clearly the viewers are already enjoying what they've seen since Shyamalan told the Upfront crowd,
“Just between us, it’s my highest-testing movie of my career. We’re now in post-production, finding every detail. Honestly, my hope is that when you experience Remain, you feel both sides of it at once — full of love and that quiet, lingering unease that doesn’t let you go.”
Considering Shyamalan has sixteen hit films to his directorial credit, including The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable, that "highest-testing movie" statement seems like a big one.
