The legend of David Ortiz will live on forever at Fenway when they retire his number 34 this upcoming season.

The Red Sox announced on Thursday when they're going to be holding the ceremony for the retirement of David Ortiz's number. It will be before their game on June 23.

Red Sox ownership announced at the end of last season during Ortiz's last game that they'll be retiring his number 34 this upcoming season. It flies in the face of the typical policy for the team regarding retired numbers. They typically only retire the numbers of Sox stars that have already been named to the Hall of Fame. In this case I think it's okay if they break protocol for the big man.

Only 10 other numbers have been retired in Red Sox history. On June 23, 2017, David Ortiz will join the other Red Sox immortals, including his good pal Pedro (No. 45).
