Rayham Euthanized Bull to Be ‘Honored’ With PETA Billboard
RAYNHAM (WBSM) — PETA has chimed in on the bull that was shot and killed this week in Raynham and plans to "honor" him with a billboard.
“To memorialize the brave bull who did everything in his power to escape slaughter only to be shot and killed near Lake Nippenicket this week, PETA plans to place a billboard in his honor along I-495 urging everyone, ‘Help Others Escape the Slaughterhouse: Please, Go Vegan,’” the organization said in a release.
The billboard will also feature a photo of a bull with the statement, "I'm Me, Not Meat."
Police described the animal as an "aggressive" 1,300-pound bull. It was bound for the slaughterhouse when it escaped Mathieu Farms, destroyed electric fences, caused a multi-vehicle highway crash, dashed into a lake and charged at police before being euthanized by its owner on August 12.
“The bull started to swim in Lake Nippenicket but was shot at multiple times by police, whose bullets shattered his leg when he came to the shore,” PETA described. “The farm’s owner later shot the terrified bull in the head as he lay helpless in the grass.”
Police noted in a release that the weapons they were using were not powerful enough to euthanize the bull, which is why the farmer’s rifle was used.
“This bull ran for his life and fought as hard as he could for his freedom, as any human would if someone tried to send them to slaughter,” PETA Senior Director Danielle Katz said. “PETA’s billboard will remind everyone that they can honor his bravery and win freedom for all other animals – from bulls to birds – by keeping them off their plates.”
PETA stated that every person who goes vegan spares nearly 200 animals every year.
