Boston Suburb Will Soon Host ‘Walking Dead’ Spinoff Filming

RANDOLPH (WBSM) — A Boston suburb will soon become overrun with zombies – and a Hollywood production – as it appears one of the entries in television’s hugely successful Walking Dead universe is coming to Randolph, Massachusetts in the next few weeks.

The Walking Dead: Dead City follows the further adventures of Walking Dead favorites Maggie and Negan, as they “travel to post-apocalyptic Manhattan – a crumbling city filled with the dead and denizens who have made it a world full of anarchy, danger, beauty and terror,” according to AMC.

The Massachusetts Film Office website lists Dead City Season 2 as currently in production in the Bay State, but there are no other details offered on the site.

TheCinemaholic.com and other sites originally reported back in December that Dead City would begin filming in Randolph in March 2024, but the seemingly reliable Twitter account @TWDUFilming tweeted on February 15 that filming would instead begin on April 8, 2024.

According to the account, that means the season likely wouldn’t debut on AMC and AMC+ until Winter 2025. We all know what Negan might say about that (although we can't print it here).

Zombie fans were likely hoping for a sooner release, but at least for now, they have The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (featuring the characters of Rick and Michonne) to tide them over.

After a successful first season, AMC renewed Dead City for a second season back in July of 2023. Season 1 was filmed in New Jersey; much of the action takes place in New York City, so it made sense to be close to the Big Apple.

Which makes it all the more interesting that Massachusetts is the filming location for Season 2.

We’re not going to get into any spoilers for Season 1 here, but let’s just say the series indicated that Negan would remain in New York. Perhaps Maggie has gone to Boston? Maybe they’re going to have Boston sub for New York, such as in 2016’s Ghostbusters?

We reached out to the production email for The Walking Dead: Dead City for more information but have not yet heard back.

As for any potential filming locations, Randolph Town Administrator Brian P. Howard said the production had not yet inquired.

"They have not approached the Town for any locations at this time," he told WBSM.
