Dartmouth Cultural Center Unveils Fall Exhibits, New Slogan, and Artist Workshops

September and October at the Dartmouth Cultural Center feature a new exhibit by a renowned local artist, numerous workshops and classes, including a "road trip" and a catchy new slogan: "Creativity Gathers Here." Cultural Center President Pauline Santos stopped by Townsquare Sunday to share the latest news and discuss the new slogan.

A Historic Legacy Inspires 'Creativity Gathers Here'

"The slogan 'Creativity Gathers Here' came from one of our volunteers, Melissa Haskell," Santos said. "Her grandmother was the last librarian who worked in this building (the original Southworth Library at 404 Elm Street in Dartmouth), so she is very interested in our organization and the building's future. She's a very creative person."

Pamela Hoss Brings 'A Lifetime of Looking' to the Gallery

September's exhibit is titled "A Lifetime of Looking" by artist Pamela Hoss of New Bedford, which runs through September 26. For more than 50 years, Hoss has built her collection around the act of looking at herself, at others, and the world.

"She does a lot of portrait work, but her work generally is all about observation, her observing things and then painting them," Santos said.

Hoss has exhibited her artwork at a number of venues, including the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Boston Center for the Arts, the Danforth Museum, and the New Bedford Art Museum. She also taught drawing for 30 years at the UMass Dartmouth before retiring in 2018.

Hoss will take part in an artist talk on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 1 p.m.

Out and About: Community Road Trips and Fall Workshops

The public is invited to join Dartmouth Cultural Center members "out and about" at a visit to Adriance Furnituremakers, located at 288 Gulf Road in Dartmouth, on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 6 p.m. Santos said no registration is necessary, and the event is free and open to all.

"If you've never seen the furniture Gary Adriance has made, it's unbelievable!" she said. "He's going to be showing us his shop and how he does things. It should be very interesting."
