PSA: Buttonwood Park Zoo Now Has a Sloth
Bernardo is a 16-year-old male, two-toed sloth that Buttonwood Park Zoo is welcoming with open arms. He’ll make his big debut to the public on Friday, January 26th at 10:45 AM. Stay tuned for photos and videos and me possibly (definitely) squealing from excitement. Although, I feel like whoever named him seriously missed out on a great opportunity to call him “Flash.”
Bernardo’s new home is in the Zoo’s Rainforests, Rivers & Reefs building. Zoo Director, Keith Lovett along with animal care staff have given Bernardo a clean bill of health and are now ready to introduce him to his new home in the building’s Brazil habitat. He’s Brazilian! We already have something in common! We are made to be best friends.
Bernardo is the first sloth to call the Buttonwood Park Zoo home. He arrived at the Zoo in mid-December and “has been under quarantine, a process that is implemented in zoos and aquariums worldwide to ensure the health of existing species. Bernardo joins the Buttonwood Park Zoo as part of the Association of Zoos & Aquariums Species Survival Plan (SSP). Zoo staff will work with AZA to develop a breeding program at the Zoo to ensure a healthy and genetically diverse population both in captivity and in the wild.”
