In an attempt to add to the depth of their offensive line, the New England Patriots announced the acquisition of guard Ryan Groy, today.

Groy was sent over to the Patriots by the Chicago Bears in return for New England's sixth-round pick from this year's draft, linebacker Matthew Wells.

Groy, who was signed by Chicago as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin prior to last season, opened the year on the Bear's practice squad. By the end of the season, the rookie worked his way onto the team's active roster where he made three consecutive starts at left guard to end the campaign.

The 6-5, 320 pounder apparently did not seem to fit into the offensive scheme being implemented by new Bears' head coach John Fox, which made him expendable according to a ProFootballTalk.com article.

Groy will likely battle it out with roster incumbents Ryan Wendell and Josh Kline along with rookies Tre' Jackson and Shaq Mason for time along the front line of the dynamic Patriots offense.

Wells was likely looking to fit into the New England plans as a special teamer and back up option at linebacker the thought was that he probably would not have cracked the final 53-man roster

While New England made the announcement official this morning, NFL Network's Rand Getlin tweeted the story first.
