The Ocean State Job Lot in Fairhaven is on the move--although not very far.

The Rhode Island-based retailer is moving across Route 6 after placing the winning bid of $6.5 million for the former Shaw's Supermarket building on Wednesday.

Fairhaven Selectman Charlie Murphy tells WBSM News he's glad to see Job Lot staying in Fairhaven.

"Ocean State Job Lot is looking to expand, and it's a great location for them," Murphy said. "It's a Rhode Island-based company, and I think it's another local company that's doing good. I think they're going to make it very successful over there."

The Shaw's location has been empty since the supermarket closed for good in August of 2013. The Job Lot move will leave an empty spot in the Fairhaven Commons. That's in addition to Kmart closing this spring, leaving another empty store.

"We have an economic development committee now in Fairhaven, comprised of business people and local residents that are working together with our town planner to see if we can encourage businesses to come to the town of Fairhaven," Murphy said.

He said having the Shaw's store filled once again will certainly help draw in more businesses.

"I think once the word gets out that the buildings are starting to become filled again, I do believe that people will see there's new and more activity, and more activity generates more business," Murphy said.

The new Ocean State Job Lot is set to open later this year.
