There is something truly magical about seeing the holidays through the eyes of a child.

That’s exactly what inspired Marion native and longtime early childhood educator Deborah Thompson to write her new children’s Christmas book, Nova’s Wish.

Thompson grew up in Marion and later spent years teaching young children at Seaside School and in her own home program. She said watching children experience wonder in nature, imagination and holiday traditions inspired the story.

The Story Behind Nova’s Wish

The book follows a baby reindeer named Nova, who is found lost in the snow by an angel. Nova is brought to the North Pole, where everything should be perfect, but the little reindeer has one heartfelt wish: Nova dreams of being adopted by a child.

When Nova finally gathers the courage to tell Santa, the big guy searches through his huge book to find the perfect child. At the end of the story, the reader discovers they are that special child chosen just for Nova.

“Every child deserves to feel chosen and special. I wanted the reader to become the hero of the story, not just watch it happen to another character.” — Deborah Thompson, Author of Nova’s Wish

Thompson said her book is a message about belonging, courage and the universal need for children to feel seen and special.

A Book That Comes to Life

Thompson didn’t stop at writing the story.

Each book comes in a red plush gift bag with a soft reindeer plush toy inside,  something children can hold and love while they read the story. Thompson has already sold over 4,000 books in person across the SouthCoast.

“When Nova is chosen at the end of the book, it’s really the child reading who is chosen. Their eyes always light up in that moment. It’s magical.” — Deborah Thompson
