The Marion Police Department is outfitting one of its own with some brand-new gear. K9 officer Norman will soon be outfitted in body armor. No, we're not talking about the popular athletic brand; it's actual body armor to protect him in the line of duty: a bullet and stab protective vest provided by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.

What Is Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.?

The East Taunton, MA 501c(3) nonprofit began in 2009 with the mission of providing "bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies."

The local nonprofit works in partnership with the vest manufacturer to donate vests to K9s across the country. Since its inception, it has provided more than 6,000 vests to K9s throughout all 50 states, vehicles equipped for K9 units, over $182,000 worth of K9 first aid kits, and more.

Custom Protection: How K9 Norman’s Vest Works

The custom vest that Norman will wear features National Institute of Justice-certified ballistic panels, which provide the maximum amount of protection. This potentially life-saving vest is valued at $1,800 and weighs about five pounds.

A Special Message for a Special Police Dog

Marion Police shared the announcement on the department's Facebook page, alongside a photo of a smiling Norman, who looked just as happy to hear the news. His new vest will even be embroidered with a special message “Born to Love – Trained to Serve – Loyal Always.”
