Bridgewater State University Police First in U.S. to Raise a Guide Dog

I'm proud to say that my alma mater, Bridgewater State University, is making history.

The BSU Police Department has teamed up with Guiding Eyes for the Blind, becoming the first police department in the country to raise a guide dog.

"We believe this partnership will be tremendously rewarding for our department and our community," BSUPD wrote in a Facebook post.

"The thought of contributing to something that will ultimately change the life of someone who is blind or visually impaired is incredibly compelling," the BSUPD wrote. "To be able to give such a meaningful gift is an opportunity to serve in a new and deeply fulfilling way."

As part of the program, the young pup will live with a member of the department for the next 14 to 18 months before entering formal training.

"We are proud to share that Officer Joseph Locke has been selected as the handler for K9 Arby, a 14-week-old American Black Labrador. Officer Locke will look after, care for, and prepare Arby for the extraordinary path ahead," the department wrote.

Proud to Be a Bear

By the looks of it, Officer Locke and Arby have quickly developed a strong, loving bond.

As a proud alumna of BSU (technically Bridgewater State College at the time) and an avid dog lover, I am so happy for this achievement.

At BSU, they say "every day is a great day to be a bear," but now every day is a great day to be a dog, too.
