A Fancy, Free Newport Perk for Hospitality Workers

If you work in the hospitality industry, you don't need me to tell you that you've had a rough couple of years. Between getting laid off during the pandemic and consistently working in a shorthanded environment with customers who just don't "get it," hospitality workers deserve a little perk.

That's why the Preservation Society of Newport County is offering all hospitality workers the chance to enjoy touring some of the most lavish properties in the world.

The Breakers, Marble House and The Elms in Newport are a part of living history.

During the Gilded Age, some of the most luxurious ballroom parties happened in these spots, with a guest list made up of a Who's Who in American society. Names like Vanderbilt, Astor, and Morgan would spend time socializing each summer at these extraordinary properties.

Amazingly, these weren't even their homes. They were equivalent to their summer cottages.

Interestingly enough, workers in restaurants, bars and hotels would have never been allowed to visit these mansions way back then unless it was to provide a service. Now that these estates are owned by the Preservation Society, however, the importance of hospitality workers and Newport's tourism industry is rightfully being recognized.

If you'd like to spend the day visiting these mansions, simply show up with a business card, an employee ID or a pay stub to gain free admission.

The offer is good Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of this week only and is subject to the Preservation Society's operating schedule. It excludes specialty tours such as “The Elms Servant Life Tour.”

Additionally, Rosecliff will be open June 13 and 14, with access available to the exhibition “Anything You Want: A Closer Look at Treasures from Newport’s Gilded Age,” in the second-floor galleries.
