Picture yourself and the family cruising along on skates, as you take in a breathtaking view of the Goat Island Lighthouse and the Newport Bridge arching over the harbor at Gurney's Resort and Marina. It's a one-of-a-kind backdrop you won't find at any other skating rink around here, and it's now open to the public.

"We're thrilled to bring back the skating rink this year," said general manager David Smiley. "Gurney's loves being able to give our guests and community a place to gather and enjoy all the season has to offer, and the skating rink always brings such a festive energy to the resort."

What gave birth in the first place to the idea of an outdoor skating rink with such a gorgeous ocean view?

"When the Newport Skating Center closed in 2018, we saw bringing the skating rink to Gurney's as an opportunity to bring the community together for a quintessential winter activity," Smiley said. "The waterfront location and the ability to literally 'skate by the sea' just added to the experience. We received a huge welcome from the community and our guests and have made the skating rink an annual tradition for winter at Gurney's Newport."

Skating is much like riding a bike. Once you learn it, the knowledge is there. If it's been awhile since you were on the ice, you can rent skates at Gurney's too. Use your street shoe size and bring a couple pairs of socks in case your feet get cold, or you need to make your rental skates less roomy. Just remember to keep your knees slightly bent all the time you're gliding around.

Last year, the pandemic stole the joy of skating outdoors at Gurney's Newport, so they're making up for it this year.

"There are a few special changes at the rink, from picturesque décor to our new après-skate menu available at our Winter Wonderland Igloos," Smiley said. "I'll leave some details as a surprise for visitors, but can definitely say that skating at Gurney's is something not to be missed this winter."
