The Salvation Army of New Bedford held an event specifically to honor nearly 100 volunteers at its 2026 Annual Volunteer Luncheon. The organization took time to recognize the local people individuals who help keep vital food programs running across New Bedford. Food for the luncheon was generously donated by Riccardi’s Italian Restaurant. The luncheon celebrated the crowd of people who give their time to support the soup kitchen, the food pantry, and other essential services.

A Community Facing Real Need

The recognition comes at a time when the need is especially urgent. According to the Greater Boston Food Bank, 40 percent of households in Massachusetts are food insecure. In New Bedford, between 18 and 23 percent of residents live below the poverty line, and roughly half of households experience food insecurity.

“Our volunteers are the heart of what we do in New Bedford,” said Major Moises Muniz. “Their commitment makes it possible for us to meet our neighbors where they are.”

Volunteers of the Year Honored

Among those recognized were four Volunteers of the Year who have made a lasting impact.

Donna Gamble and Michael Spoor, longtime New Bedford residents, were honored for decades of service. The couple began volunteering in the 1980s and now regularly serve hot lunches at the Salvation Army soup kitchen. They also support the organization during the holiday season by ringing the Red Kettle bell.

Rommel Sanchez was recognized for his dedication to the food pantry, volunteering several days a week to help ensure families have access to groceries. Sheila Santiago was also honored for her consistent support, volunteering multiple days each week to assist neighbors facing food insecurity.

Supporting the Mission Year Round

The luncheon also highlighted the contributions of Quittacus Masonic Lodge, which received the Battle of the Bells honor after raising $4,800 during the holiday season through its Red Kettle efforts.

The Salvation Army of New Bedford continues to provide meals and resources to residents throughout the week and is actively seeking volunteers to support its ongoing mission.
