If you’re one of the brave people who risk life and limb driving up to Boston on Route 24 each day, some upcoming changes might make your commute a little easier—especially if you’re traveling from Taunton.

A Rare Happening

It’s not often that a new exit ramp is built on one of the major highways here on the SouthCoast, but drivers will now have a new option when traveling on Route 24 in Taunton. After what feels like endless construction, the improvements are finally starting to pay off.

A new exit ramp on Route 24 southbound leading to Route 140 northbound is set to open on Thursday, February 6, 2025. According to a press release from the City of Taunton, the new exit will be numbered 17B on Route 24 South and will provide easier access to the future East Taunton Commuter Rail Station. Commuters heading to Route 140 southbound will use Exit 17A.

The new exit is expected to improve traffic flow in the surrounding areas, making it easier to access both Route 140 and the commuter rail.

Officials hope that Exit 17B in Taunton will help reduce commuters' travel times and streamline traffic at the complex highway splits in that area.

The primary purpose of the new exit ramp is to improve access to the Taunton Commuter Rail Station for all travelers—whether driving, biking, walking, or using public transportation.

Next Steps?

The next phase of improvements in the area will include widening Route 140 to add a new southbound bypass lane between the Route 24 north and southbound ramps. Additionally, traffic signals along Route 140 will be upgraded or replaced as part of the project.
