NEW BEDFORD - In the Bible, Samson's hair was cut off to diminish his strength. In New Bedford, Police Detective Claudia Sampson is cutting her hair off to give strength to children fighting cancer.

For the fourth year in a row, Detective Sampson is shaving her head to raise money for children undergoing cancer treatment.

Detective Sampson tells WBSM News she takes part in the Buzz Off for Kids with Cancer fundraiser because it brings some normalcy to the children's lives. "It gives the funds to the kids in the hospital while they're in the hospital. It provides them with birthday parties, ice cream parties, pizza parties. It helps kids that are sitting there for weeks on end, getting their treatment," said Detective Sampson.

Detective Sampson is a two-time cancer survivor, and remembers how much it meant to have people support her during those times.

"And I can only imagine how kids feel when they're sick, and now they're losing their hair. And sometimes other little kids aren't too kind to them. I just feels that it shows solidarity that we're here and we understand."

Sampson is raising money ahead of the June 4 fundraiser at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro. She's a 31-year veteran of the New Bedford Police Department.
