If you've always thought about becoming a police officer, the New Bedford Police Department is about to go on a hiring spree.  We may be seeing a number of new faces on the force patrolling places like Ashley Boulevard and Acushnet Avenue as the department hopes to bring on between 40 and 50 new cadets.

Here's what you need to know if you'd like to be considered for one of those new positions for a rookie New Bedford police officer.

Apply For the Upcoming Exam

Interested candidates should visit the civil service portion of the state's website, mass.gov.  You'll click here to find out more and apply for the police exam.  Registration for the exam ends on January 28.  The police exam runs from March 15, 2025 to March 22, 2025.

Physical Fitness

Assistant Chief of Police Derek Belong says physical fitness standards are posted i[up on the Mass.gov website.  "They have to be able to run a mile and a half in a certain amount of time, there are push-ups, sit-ups and a quarter mile sprint. There's also a three minute obstacle course."  The standards must be passed before attending the academy.

 Study Session

Candidates are highly encouraged to attend an optional test review session run by Training Sergeant Trevor Sylvia and both Assistant Chiefs of Police Derek Belong and Scott Carola.  The session begins at 11am on March 1 at Keith Middle School.  There is no cost to attend.  New Bedford is the only department on the SouthCoast to offer such a class.  Belong believes most will have no problem with the exam if they attend the study session.

New Bedford Residents

While New Bedford residents get preference, anyone can apply for a job with the New Bedford Police Department.
