NEW BEDFORD - The City's Park Board is displeased with the sudden revelation that there are preliminary plans for a business park at the current site of the Whaling City Golf Course on Hathaway Road.

Chairman Pete Boswell says he hadn't heard of any such proposal until Wednesday. "I'm disgusted. We were blindsided," Boswell said. "I heard it on WBSM driving home from work at 4 o'clock this afternoon."

...another industrial park for out-of-town people to come and work in a factory for five years and have it close and split.

Mayor Jon Mitchell is expected to outline details of the plan at a press conference at City Hall Thursday afternoon.

Boswell says the board's main concern is the reduction of what he says is already limited recreational space in New Bedford.

"We appreciate the green space that we have in the city. And they 100% agree with me. We'd like to be involved in the decision-making process."

Boswell says he has fielded dozens of calls and text messages from citizens expressing their disapproval of the project.

"The wasting of the green space; another industrial park for out-of-town people to come and work in a factory for five years and have it close and split."

The Park Board will contact the City Solicitor to see what authority, if any, through Massachusetts General Laws the Board has to influence the proposal.
