New Bedford Welcome the Return of Replica of Magellan’s Tall Ship
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — All aboard! A piece of history is setting sail across the ocean blue and heading towards the SouthCoast.
Noa Trinidad, a replica of the 16th-century tall ship, will return to Pope's Island Marina in New Bedford from September 11 to 15.
Last year marked the 500th anniversary of the original ship's most famous trek, and it is celebrating with a return visit to the marina.
Tied to Portuguese culture, the Noa Trinidad is a ship that circumnavigated the globe with Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan's fleet. With New Bedford being a city of Portuguese pride, it seems only fitting to experience the ship's history for yourself.
"Many visitors came to New Bedford last year to see the ship and we got some great feedback, so we knew we wanted to have it return this year," Explore New Bedford Director Ashley Payne said. "It's a perfect match with New Bedford's long and storied maritime history."
During the tours, guests can immerse themselves inside the floating museum and exhibits, where you'll also have the opportunity to interact with the crew.
For those looking to experience a unique view of the ship, you can take the New Bedford Launch, a boat ride for the whole family in the New Bedford Harbor. From Pier 3 to Pope's Island, you will see beautiful waterfront views.
This year, the return of Noa Trinidad will lead to a fun weekend around the city. As AHA! celebrates its 25th anniversary, expect to see food trucks, vendors and other entertainment downtown.
Tours will be available from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. from September 11 to 15.
There will be a brief welcoming ceremony at Pope's Island on Tuesday, September 10 at 5 p.m.
Tickets may be purchased in person at Pope's Island Marina or online in advance.
