You may be surprised to find out that there are over 7,000 licensed dogs in the city of New Bedford.

If you were to guess, what would you think the most popular breed of dogs would be in the city?

I reached out to the city clerk in New Bedford to get the up to date numbers. Before I spoke to the city, I felt like I see a lot of pit bulls and German shepherds out in public. That being said, big dogs are more challenging to own in the tighter quarters that a city offers. I really wasn't sure what the most popular dogs would be.

After I reviewed the numbers, it was plain as day the types of dogs that New Bedford residents prefer to own. There was an unmistakable trend.

I'm also unsure about the number of licensed dogs in the city. The 2020 census indicates that there are roughly 39,000 households in the city, which means that only 18 percent of homes have dogs. While that number seems a little low, there is an unknown number of unlicensed dogs.
