On July 8, six people were sent to the hospital following a shooting that occurred in the same area, at the intersection of Russell Street and Acushnet Avenue, in the area of the Monte’s Park playground.

In that shooting, officers arrived to find three adult victims suffering from gunshot wounds that were not life-threatening. Police later learned an additional three victims had been taken to St. Luke’s by private vehicle.

Mayor Jon Mitchell called that shooting “a brazen act of violence” and said “we will not sit idly by in the face of threats to public safety.”

“We will not permit a few people to deprive our residents of their sense of security,” he said.

That neighborhood had just been the location of “several fights/disturbances” on the night of July 6 following the Cape Verdean Recognition Day festivities.

Police did not say if the two separate shootings or those fights have any connection to each other. No arrests have been announced in either shooting.
