New Bedford Breakfast Favorite Mimi’s Kitchen Closes Its Doors Indefinitely
Sad news broke in New Bedford on Sunday, October 6th, as the beloved Mimi’s Kitchen on Nauset Street made the heart-wrenching decision to close its doors indefinitely. This small mom-and-pop establishment, cherished for its home-cooked comfort food and welcoming atmosphere, became a local favorite since its opening in February 2022.
For those who never had the chance to experience Mimi’s, it’s truly a missed opportunity. However, for the regulars like myself, the closing feels like the end of an era—a bittersweet farewell to a place that had become a Sunday morning tradition for my wife and me. Owners Tara and Cory Gordon, known for their hospitality and passion for serving their community, made the tough call due to the harsh economic realities that have plagued the restaurant industry. The financial burden was simply too much to bear, leaving them no choice but to step away.
Mimi’s Kitchen was more than just a breakfast and lunch spot. It was a gathering place where locals would indulge in hearty meals like chicken and waffles, Portuguese-inspired dishes, and Mimi’s famous kale soup and award-winning chicken corn chowder (a clear winner at the New Bedford Chowder Fest). The restaurant offered a sense of warmth and connection, embodying the spirit of family dinners that owner Tara (the Mimi behind the name) aimed to bring to the community. It was a refuge from the hustle and bustle, where people could enjoy comfort food made with love.
In the short time since it opened, Mimi’s Kitchen became a local hotspot, not just for its food, but for the sense of belonging it offered.
Tara and Cory’s dream of sharing family traditions and affordable meals with the city may be on pause, but the memories of their cozy little kitchen will remain. Mimi’s Kitchen will forever be remembered for the joy and comfort it brought to many, and its absence will leave a void in the fabric of the local community. We wish the Gordons the best, and like many, we hope to see Mimi’s return someday.
Until then, goodbye, Mimi’s. You will be missed.
