Not all heroes wear capes. Some wear aprons and food safety gloves.

That was the case on Tuesday, March 24, inside the busy kitchen at Barrett’s Alehouse in Fall River, where what started as a routine shift quickly turned into a life-or-death moment.

One of the restaurant’s line cooks, Sammy, suddenly began choking while on the job and in a matter of seconds, everything changed.

That’s when Curtis Medeiros of New Bedford stepped in.

A Split-Second Decision That Saved a Life

Without hesitation, Medeiros jumped into action and performed the Heimlich maneuver, clearing Sammy’s airway and quite literally saving her life.

Think about that for a second: no time to second-guess, no time to panic, just natural instinct.

According to Barrett’s Alehouse, Medeiros remained calm under pressure and acted with the kind of confidence you can't really teach, and because of him, Sammy is still here.

From Serious Moment to Humble (and Hilarious) Replay

After everything cooled off, Medeiros later rewatched the security footage and gave a play-by-play that perfectly balances the intensity of the moment with a little well-earned humor.

“When you're just minding your own business, grilling some chicken, and then all of a sudden your co-worker just starts to over-chew on some well-done steak tips… now she's starting to realize she's choking… she's trying to swallow it… oh, it's not working… now the fear kicks in. Now we got to call Curtis," he said.

Once the adrenaline wore off, Medeiros couldn’t help but celebrate a little.

“It was my first time ever giving someone the Heimlich maneuver, so I’m hyped… hands in the air… everybody knows I’m the hero. What’s up? We save lives over here, yo!” he said.

It’s real, it’s raw, and honestly, it’s exactly how a lot of us would react after realizing what just happened.

Why Knowing the Heimlich Matters More Than You Think

Moments like this are a powerful reminder that emergencies don’t come with warnings.

Choking can happen anywhere. At a restaurant, at home, even around the dinner table with family, and when it does, the person closest is often the only one who can help in time.

The Heimlich maneuver is simple to learn, but in the right moment, it can mean the difference between life and tragedy. Medeiros didn’t just react, he knew what to do.

That knowledge turned him into a hero.

A Team That Truly Has Each Other’s Backs

Barrett’s Alehouse shared just how proud they are of Medeiros, calling his actions a reflection of the kind of teammate he is every single day.

“This is something you can’t teach,” they wrote. “It speaks volumes about who he is.”

It’s easy to go through the motions at work. It’s a whole different thing to step up when someone’s life is on the line.

Well done, Curtis.

21 Songs To Keep In Time While Performing CPR

When performing CPR, rather than trying to count each compression, it is suggested that you quietly sing a song that has the proper rate of beats. The Bee Gee's “Stayin’ Alive” is aptly suggested as a choice. “Another One Bites the Dust”, by Queen, also fits the bill but probably isn’t appropriate. The following 21 songs have the proper 100/120 bpm to keep in time for chest compressions.
