NEW BEDFORD — A New Bedford man has been charged with drunk and negligent driving — among other violations — after he allegedly fled from a hit and run crash that injured one person over the weekend.

New Bedford police spokesman Lt. Scott Carola said 23-year-old Dawson Knickerbocker was taken into custody after the Sunday morning crash.

Knickerbocker is charged with leaving the scene of a crash with injury and driving without a license, along with the other charges.

According to Carola, the crash took place at around 1:45 a.m. Sunday morning at the intersection of Coggeshall Street and Acushnet Avenue.

Carola said North End officers responded to the crash and found that an SUV had rear-ended a sedan with two people in it, causing the airbags to deploy.

One of the passengers in the sedan was treated for a minor injury.

The SUV driver — later identified as Knickerbocker — allegedly fled the scene, but he and two passengers were caught by the patrol officers shortly afterwards.

A third passenger in the SUV had passed out and was later taken to the hospital, according to Carola.

The police spokesman said Knickerbocker was allegedly unlicensed and under the influence of alcohol at the time.

He faces charges of leaving the scene of a crash with personal injury and property damage, possessing an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, negligent operation, driving under the influence, and unlicensed operation, according to police logs.
