New Bedford Man Charged With Punching Woman And Stealing Her Purse

Police say it happened Sunday night as the woman walked in the south end of the city. The 24-year-old woman was on her way to the Bank 5 ATM at the corner of Rivet and County streets when she was punched in the head and her purse was stolen.

Police credit the help of a witness for the quick arrest of 38 Carlos Gomes Rodrigues of Cottage Street. He was found in a Purchase Street yard with the purse. Rodrigues is being charged with unarmed assault and battery.
