NEW BEDFORD — A New Bedford man will spend up to 15 years in prison for carrying an illegal firearm into the Funz Trampoline Park in Kings Plaza last month while on probation for a shooting in Fall River.

The Bristol County District Attorney's Office said 32-year-old Chantra Say pleaded guilty on Tuesday to illegally carrying a firearm, a high-capacity feeding device, and ammunition

Say, formerly of Fall River, has two prior firearm-related arrests, including a conviction for assault with intent to commit murder for a 2010 Fall River shooting, and an arrest in 2007 at the age of 17 for another shooting in Fall River.

At the time, he also had arrest warrants on larceny and breaking and entering charges, according to a Herald News article.

New Bedford police responded to the trampoline park on March 4 for a report of a man wearing a grey sweatshirt, black ski mask, and blue jeans with a gun in his pocket.

Officers arrived to find Say, who tried to hand off an object pulled from his waistband to a second man, who refused.

Police detained him after he tossed the object into a nearby trash can, and recovered the item, which turned out to be a loaded Jimenez 9mm pistol that contained 12 rounds.

Although he at first gave police a false name, police said they ultimately confirmed Say's identity with help from the state police gang unit.

"Despite being on probation for a prior shooting, the defendant was walking around in a park for children with a loaded gun," said Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn.

"He has a history of convictions for violent offenses and clearly continues to be a significant danger to the community," Quinn added.

"I’m pleased this case was resolved very quickly and that the defendant will be off the street for up to fifteen years."
