New Bedford, along with Providence is number one nationwide when it comes to not reading the Bible.

Time Magazine who was responsible for the study said "America, you have a new Sodom and Gomorrah"

The American Bible Society defined Bible-mindedness in response to two questions asked of 46,274 adults in 100 different cities, whether they had read the Bible in the past seven days and if they believe it is accurate.

Out of the 100 cities surveyed, a good number of them were in the northeast.

Some religious leaders reacted differently to the new that New Bedford is number one.

According to the Standard Times,  Rev. Dr. Neil C. Damgaard, pastor of the Dartmouth Bible Church said  "I think it's cool and I believe it," "It's an indication of the whole Northeast.  There are those who read the Bible and there are those who act on its teachings," said Rabbi Rafael Kantor of Tifereth Israel Congregation, New Bedford. "I'm more interested in those who act on its teachings. "Just because someone reads the Bible does not make him or her an ethical person, he said.

The study was also questioned by some. The Standard Times reported that The Rev. David Lima, executive director of the Inter-Church Council of Greater New Bedford, said "I don't know anyone who was asked or polled. How did they get that information?,"
