Hello, my name is Gazelle, I am 38 years old, and even though I’ve lived in New Bedford for numerous years, I tried for the very first time a sandwich from Giammalvo's Market.

Yes, I know, this may come as a shock, but it’s true.

We told you about the gentleman who was painting the mural of Puerto Rico at the neighboring mini mart across the street from Giammalvo’s when someone stole his painting materials. It was Giammalvo's camera system that provided footage of the criminals.

It’s never too late to try new things, and although I’m late to the game, I had to at least stop in and say thank you, and of course, get a sandwich to see what all the fuss was about.

Late to the Party, But Worth the Wait

My buddy Benny Olmeda recommended the Italian grinder, so that’s what I went with, and let me tell you something, there’s a good reason why people have been buying sandwiches from them for years.

Back in the day, these sandwiches used to be only $2, but like all restaurants, delis, and meat markets, prices are on the rise and the legend of the $2 sandwich is gone with the wind. However, this sandwich was fresh and worth the $4.95 – which, if we’re being honest, is still a steal.

It’s All About the Bread

The thing that stood out the most for me was the bread. I’m not sure what they use or where they get it, but the bread was out of this world and soft as if it were just baked that morning. I spoke with a couple of the workers there, Sandra and Susie, who were as friendly as it gets, serving sandwiches with a smile. Quite refreshing, to say the least.

Turns Out, I Was the Last to Know

I should have taken Michael Rock’s advice years ago when he, himself, first discovered this place. Even my friends have been giving me flack for finally trying it after living in the city as long as I have.

“How have you lived in New Bedford this long and not had one (a sandwich) OMG!" Madisen Dugan said.

“How have you never had sandwiches there… OMG so good. Chicken salad is also top tier and a great place to grab sandwiches before a beach day," Kristina said.

“OMG, this was the first thing my husband brought me to try when I moved to New Bedford, sooo good!" said Jamie Furtado.

“We get them all the time, great value and they will make them for you fresh at the deli, too," said Jennifer Daigle Andrews.

“LOL, dude where have you been? I been going there since I was a child, especially for the sandwiches," Brian Tillett said.

“First time !!!???!? Boyyyyy, you’re missing out! That’s the go to spot for beach sandwiches lol so yummy and has been since the 90s. HIGHLY underrated!" said Scott Monty.

You get the idea.

Call me clueless, I’m just glad I finally took the time to pick up a sandwich from there. I’ve been to just about every restaurant and market in the city, and somehow neglected the one place where everyone and their mother raves about.

I can now check that off my bucket list and can say for certain that I will be back. Especially for that chicken salad sandwich.
