New Bedford’s Gary’s Best: The Legacy Behind the Name
For over four decades, Gary’s Best Hot Dogs has been a cherished part of New Bedford’s food scene.
Now, the iconic stand is up for sale, marking the end of an era for the Franco family and the countless customers who have made it a go-to spot for generations.
What many people might not realize is that Gary’s Best wasn’t named after its owner Joe Franco, but rather his son, Gary Franco, who was just four years old when his father decided to open the stand.
Originally, the family considered naming it “Franco’s Frankfurters,” but Gary’s grandfather suggested using his grandson’s name instead.
And thus, “Gary’s Best” was born – a name known for quality, affordability and a piece of local history.

Gary Franco, now grown and working as a nurse anesthetist at St. Anne’s Hospital in Fall River, recently reflected on his childhood spent at the stand.
“I can still remember sitting on the equipment at the construction site,” he said. “My dad and mom gave it their all.”
His father, who had worked for Continental Screw Company before it shut down, decided to open the hot dog stand after years of working multiple jobs, including at other hot dog spots in the city.

The decision to sell the business is bittersweet for the family.
“My dad is 74, and I used to joke that he’d drop dead serving a hot dog at 80,” Gary said. “He just loves to work.”
His father’s dedication was evident in the long hours he put in, sometimes opening as early as 6 a.m. and closing at midnight. The stand became a late-night stop for many, especially after a night out.

While many have wondered why Gary himself isn’t taking over, he admitted it wasn’t an easy decision.
“I’ve worked too hard to get to where I am in my career,” he said. “And I know what it takes to run that place. My dad devoted everything to it, and I don’t want to do it halfway.”
As the Franco family prepares to say goodbye to Gary’s Best, they’re asking customers to share their memories and photos from the past 40 years. The stand may soon change hands, but its legacy in New Bedford will remain.
As for Gary, he said he probably won’t be going out for hot dogs once it’s sold. After decades of unlimited access, it just wouldn’t feel the same.
