New Bedford’s 10 Most Dangerous Intersections
Do you think you know the most dangerous intersections in New Bedford? Check out the list below. These intersections saw the most crashes over three years (2018-2020).
Driving around New Bedford can feel dangerous at times. With the number of people texting while driving (or even streaming their favorite shows while driving) it feels like being out there on the road is a gamble.
Interestingly enough, if you look at it by the numbers, New Bedford drivers are safer per capita than most other locations across the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. According to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, New Bedford ranks below average for car crashes.
However, even though New Bedford is ranked higher than average for safety, the state agency has identified several "hotspots" that see a higher number of crashes than normal.
The city's South End seems to be the quietest for car accidents. There are no statistical trouble spots south of Hazelwood Park.
The far North End tends to be quieter, as well, with no crash "hotspots" located north of Pa Raffa's.
This leaves the downtown area and Route 6, which attracts the most trouble. The state has outlined several areas in New Bedford that classify as "crash clusters," meaning they rank within the top 5% of the region. In our case, that is the Southeastern Regional Planning and Economic Development District, which goes as far north as Mansfield, west to Wareham, east to Seekonk and along the SouthCoast.
