Break-in Attempts at New Bedford Restaurants Sparks Investigation
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — A recent break-in attempt at a New Bedford business has left the owners of Gary's Best Hot Dogs taking extra precautions to find the suspect behind the incident.
The incident happened on July 25, at around 2:15 a.m., when owner Anita Franco received a notification on her phone about an attempted break-in at their Ashley Boulevard location.
Franco told WBSM that police also notified them, which prompted them to head out to see what had happened.
According to Franco, video surveillance captured from the store showed the suspect going around the building, trying to figure out how to get in.
That's when security alarms started due to a broken window on the side of the building.
"When we got there, there were at least three vehicles with lights shining on the building," she said. "The couple escaped when the alarm went off. He broke the window, and the alarm went on when he reached his hand in."
She confirmed that nothing was taken except a few bags of chips possibly swiped next to the window.
Unfortunately, Gary's Best Hot Dogs wasn't the only business affected.
It's alleged that G&S Pizza on Acushnet Avenue also had a break-in just the night before on July 24, leading them to believe the same suspect is connected to both incidents.
"What I heard through the grapevine is that he only got a couple of dollars at the pizza place," Franco said.
Although officers were given surveillance video, Franco said there was insufficient evidence to identify the suspect. Franco and her husband are working with police and hoping the public can help further identify the person behind the crime.
Since the incident, Gary's window has been repaired, and bars have also been placed on the windows to prevent another crime like this from happening.
A photo of the suspect from surveillance footage is posted on the Gary's Best Facebook page.
