Longtime New Bedford Public Servant Marty Treadup Announces Retirement from Board of Assessors
NEW BEDFORD (WBSM) — New Bedford City Council President Ryan Pereira announced today that the council is seeking applications to fill the remainder of the term of Assessor Marty Treadup, who has announced his retirement.
Treadup was in the middle of a six-year term after being re-elected to the Board of Assessors in 2023. Assessors serve a six-year term.
Marty Treadup’s Legacy of Public Service
In a release announcing the request for applications, Pereira called Treadup’s time on the Board of Assessors a “historic and dedicated tenure.”
"For decades, Marty Treadup has been a cornerstone of public service in New Bedford," Pereira said. "His depth of knowledge, steady leadership, and unwavering commitment to the taxpayers of our city have left an indelible mark. We owe Marty a tremendous debt of gratitude for his long-serving dedication, and we wish him the absolute best in his next chapter."
Whoever fills Treadup’s seat will join two other long-serving assessors on the three-person board, Peter Berthiaume and Kimberly Saunders.
Role and Responsibilities of the Board of Assessors
The Board of Assessors is “responsible for the valuation of all real estate and personal property in the City of New Bedford, ensuring that property taxes are allocated fairly and in accordance with Massachusetts General Law,” according to the release.
Salary, Requirements, and How to Apply
New Bedford’s Code of Ordinances calls for the city council to select the replacement for any vacancies on the Board of Assessors. Board members earn a salary of $20,291, according to a New Bedford Light article, and must pass a training course required by state law.
Pereira said any “civic-minded residents” who want to fill the vacancy should submit a resume with their qualifications and a letter of interest to City Clerk Dennis Farias at Dennis.Farias@newbedford-ma.gov. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, June 30, by 5 p.m., and all applications will be made available to the public.
