New Bedford Art Museum/ArtWorks! Welcomes New Executive Director

NEW BEDFORD — The New Bedford Art Museum/ArtWorks!, has hired a new Executive Director.

Former Pratt Institute Program Director Suzanne de Vegh is set to start leading the city arts organization on Sept. 6.

De Vegh holds a degree in art history from UMass Amherst and a master’s degree in museum leadership from Bank Street College in New York.

A long-time leader in the New York City cultural scene, de Vegh has produced more than 100 public programs and curated more than 50 exhibitions throughout her career.

She has written for print platforms like Artcritical, Art Papers, Art Spiel, Ceramics: Art & Perception, Sculpture, and The Brooklyn Rail.

Prior to accepting the position in New Bedford, de Vegh was a Program Director at Pratt Institute, a Director of Public Programs and Audience Engagement at the American Folk Art Museum, and Program Officer at the Japan Society, all in New York.

New Bedford Art Museum/ArtWorks! Board Chair A. Lawrence Jenkens said he is excited about de Vegh joining the team.

"She brings us experience as an arts administrator that is both broad and deep, and I expect that she will take the Museum and its community-based mission to new levels," he said.

"I know that Suzanne is excited to roll up her sleeves and get to work very soon, and we on the Board stand ready to assist her in every way we can."

Meanwhile de Vegh expressed her enthusiasm about taking on the New Bedford Art Museum/ArtWorks! Executive Director role.

“I am honored to join a dedicated staff and board whose deep commitment to the local community is extraordinary," she said.

"Building on the museum’s strength as a community anchor, I intend to work strategically with a wide range of stakeholders to foster local community connections to the greater art world and establish NBAM as a national and international destination for innovative contemporary art."
