It's National Margarita Day and if you feel like celebrating that fact here on the SouthCoast, you may need a few suggestions on where to go.

So we put the question out to you and put together a list of the Top Ten Spots for Margaritas on the SouthCoast.

While plenty of Mexican restaurants ranked on our list, they weren't the only places you love to grab what has become a signature drink of fun. So find out if your favorite margarita made our list.

The History of the Margarita

Believe it or not, the margarita is not yet 100 years old. What seems like a beverage that has been around forever was actually created in 1938 at a restaurant in Baja, California.

The story goes that restaurant owner Carlos “Danny” Herrera made the drink for a famous customer named Marjorie King, who was a dancer in Broadway's 'Ziegfeld Follies.'

King was reportedly allergic to spirits, but not tequila, so he made her a drink all her own to enjoy. And it became a signature drink that many Americans now enjoy regardless of any allergies.

Other stories say a bartender in Mexico named Francisco “Pancho” Morales first created the drink in 1945 and yet another claims Tommy Hilton (of the Hilton hotel family) brought the drink to his hotels after discovering it in Acapulco, Mexico in 1948.

This last story even includes the name Margarita, since it was said Margarita Sames, a Dallas “upper class” citizen created the drink at her vacation home, where Hilton first drank it.

However the triple sec, tequila, and lime juice concoction came our way, were certainly glad it did.

Many different varieties of margarita have been created over the years and since 2008 we even celebrate a National Margarita Day every February 22.

This year the 'holiday' falls on a Saturday, so even more reason to get out an enjoy one at one of the SouthCoast's favorite spots for margaritas.
