WAREHAM - Massachusetts State Police say they are assisting Wareham Police in responding to a threat made to a school in the town.

State Troopers from the Bourne barracks, along with K-9 officers, State Police Bomb Squad, and the State Police Air Wing Unit have responded to the area surrounding Wareham High School.

Multiple local agencies, including Marion, Mattapoisett, and Fairhaven Police are also assisting in the response.

A message posted to the Wareham Public Schools website indicated the threat was made electronically:

Today an email was sent to an administrator which threatened the safety of students. Buildings have been placed in lock down as the police are in process of searching the buildings. Information will be shared as it becomes available.

The nature of the threat is unknown at this time.

All schools in the Wareham Public School District have been placed on lockdown.

Students attending summer school and camp at the middle and high schools have been transported to the Wareham YMCA at 33 Charge Pond Road. Parents are asked to meet their children there.

Wareham Police Chief Kevin Walsh says the email threat sent to the school department Monday suggested a gunman was hiding in one of the schools.

"Every threat we have to put it on a certain level. This one was at the top of all levels because it was specific, up until the point of what school," he said.

Police searched the buildings before determining there was no threat present. The schools were given the "all-clear" shortly before 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Chief Walsh says schools will be opened as normal on Tuesday, but with increased police patrols in the area of each one.
